Yes. It’s done for the spot lock feature.

I am a new user so I could easily be wrong but it is my understanding that you don’t have to make the 2 circles unless you install the magnetic compass puck. I did not install it initially because it is not required for spot lock, and is only needed to provide boat orientation for the jog function.
Later Mr Jones said that it would help reduce the spot lock “hunting” so I installed it did the 2 circles.

The circles are to calibrate the heading sensor. The heading sensor enhances the spot lock feature.
