Sounds like the gears are gummed up and just needs a good cleaning. Start there and if it doesn’t work might be in the market for a new reel.

By the way it sounds the factory grease may have just dried up sitting in the box for a while. The lack of use may be what's actually causing it. Degrease and relube it. Or send it to tackletrap.com and they'll do the same for you. $25 range..
