I only use monofilament (Excel) clear blue fluorescent. 25# for flipping/pitching, 20# for most topwater baits, 17# for jig, worm and spinnerbaits. 12# crankbaits and jerkbait, on baitcasters.
8# for sneaky head and tube, 6# for grub on spinning tackle.

I have been using mono for 56 years. I do use braid on frogs and flipping the thick stuff. All other baits I go with mono. I like the stretch when a big one is one.

I still use monofilament for everything. It worked fine before braid and floro came along and it works just as well now for me. I am going to use braid on flip/ pitch rod and try it out on a spinning rod, and maybe try floro on a jig rod, but I will mostly stick with mono.

The other lines are another tool to use for the job, but I guess I’m old school and stubborn, lol!

When Mono was the only game in town, that is what I used. Then came the super lines. I tried most all of them. Slowly I am going back to mono

Here’s a guide with recommendations on line types and sizes. Pretty good starting point when making a selection.

I use a 4 inch worm type plastic t-rigged on an offset 2/0 gami hook with a 1/64 once bullet sinker. I fish it on spinning tackle using 8 lb berkley Trilene XT mono. I catch more than half my shallow fish on this setup. No chance I would ever change. I have perfected this setup for maximum confidence.

After this setup I am open to other line types. I mix them up and alternate until I find one that I have more confidence in. My dropshot setup is straight floro. I started experimenting with braid and floro leader the end of last year.

I carry about an 8" section of dowel rod in my boat. If I am really hung up with braid I wrap the line around the dowel a few times and pull like crazy till it breaks free.

Trilne Big Game or BPS Excel mono for almost everything. The only line I hate more than braid is flouro.
