    Optimax noise?

While fishing this morning I noticed a noise from the motor stopped removed cowl and took a video. Remove belt and check idler pulley and hub on compressor. Noticed a little looseness and compressor hub idler pulley seemed good. Does it sound like compressor? Thanks for your help in advance.

Not a problem. Hope you can get it posted as I am interested in watching it. I have an Opti with 600+ hours on it so naturally, I'm interested in such things.

In the video that compressor pulley definitely looks loose. I would get the belt off and check if the pulley mounting screws are loose of if there is play in the compressor shaft bearing. I would definitely not run it like that any more than I had to.

I idled back to ramp. No changes in noise, but something is not right. Had the cowl off last weekend when I moved motor on jackplate. Didn’t torque anything but checked compressor hub and idler pulley for looseness. Hoping Don Weed would watch videos and tell me if I need to head up to Greenville.

I have never viewed the motor from that angle but have MANY times from the side. That compressor does not look right. Call Don/Rhonda and get to Greenville.

I called two times this afternoon and it went to voicemail both times. I stopped by Mercury dealer in town on the way home. Mechanic watch video and said it looked like the compressor bearings were failing. How much does a new compressor job cost?

Remove the belt. Easy to do. Then you can feel ANY slop or looseness. With the belt tensioned, it is hard to feel anything by hand. Sure looks like it is wobbling, cause will be found with belt off much easier.

I would not run that motor again until u change out that compressor, in line oil filters, and an oil prime sequence.

U may need have your fuel rails cleaned too.

    Don't run that motor.

Compressor is about 750. In line filters are about 30 an oil prime is 125. This is if u do the work. It took me about an hour.

How many hours do you have on the motor? I had 412 when I changed mine out.

Yes, I've taken belt off and compressor hub moves approximately .100-.125 from side to side. I don't plan on running the motor until repair is complete. I don't have any idea hours on motor. I purchased this boat last September and guy told me there was around 300 hours on motor. No documentation to prove runtime but was going from last checkup visit to mechanic. Do you need a puller to remove compressor hub?

If there is side to side play, then the compressor needs replaced.

NO it is very easy to replace. The new compressor is slightly different than the old model but again if you are mechanically inclined then it will be easy for you. If it were me though, I would do a full work up on this motor since you have no idea what has been done to it lately. Saw your other post about the RPM BEEP sound. This is concerning.

You have issues. It may be as simple as the compressor only but if it were me, I would have the lower unit pressure tested along with a new water pump, upper seals, and oil. You can do this also yourself. Relatively simple.

One of the issues with a bad compressor is that it often leads to metal in the fuel rails if you didn't catch it in time and the recommendation in here is to have your fuel rails professionally cleaned also. Don can do this for you here if you send it to him.

In regards to the beep, here is what I would do...

Get your engine to your Local (AUTHORIZED) Mercury Dealer, for Computer Diagnostic System PRINTOUTS of the:

    -Run History
    -Freeze Frame (Fault) History
    -Fault Seconds Counters.

I would also change out the fuel filter
I would replace or rebuild the pulse fuel pump
If the fuel line is original, I would replace it along with the bulb.
I would clean or replace the thermostats and clean the compressor water strainer ( you need to do watch this carefully as it can clog up quickly if you run through muck ) and flush the motor with your garden hose attached. (Motor is not running). I do this with the thermostats and the strainer out so you have all the crap completely cleaned out.

Lube all points. I do this almost every trip.

if you want to motor to be relatively hassle free, you unfortunately need to be hypervigilant. ONce you have done these things you can go for many hours without too many issues. Make sure you use the cocktail that is spoken of in here that Don promotes for your gas.

Also curious what your water temp was when you had the beep sound at 5800 RPM. INcidentally, your prop is probably fine. Don't send it back quite yet. Dont run your motor to find out. Only if you remember.
