    2005 200HP Optimax....too much PSI ?

Took a boat I am looking to buy on a test drive (boat had not been run in 6 months and water pump is 4 years old but with only 5 hours on it).....tell tale was strong and PSI around 2-3 PSI at idle..but even at 4,000 RPM it was around 20 PSI and then at WOT it was pegged T 30 PSI

    Serial Number is - 1B054992

If I buy the boat first thing I will be doing is replacing the water pump ...is the high PSI something to be concerned about? If so any solutions to maybe fix it besides water pump replacement ?

    Thanks!

Was the WP gauge analog (hose connected to gauge)?

Yes, it is not a digital gauge...analog that uses a water hose to read.....

    The gauge is likely bad.

it is odd that it would read accurately at idle though...regardless if I purchase the boat I will be putting in a new water pump and I will also be installing the Mercury vessel view mobile...which should be able to tell me actual PSI if I am not mistaken ?

Does it have scoops on it? Could be a stuck popper valve, but that would usually cause an overheat.

If it has nose cone inlets the velocity head alone at 60 mph is a little over 52 psi, more than the poppet could handle. The gauge may be fine.

do not believe it has nose cone inlets....it is the stock lower unit for this motor and motor is on a 19 FT Bass Cat.

While this information may be accurate for your boat it will NOT be universal for others. This should NOT be used as any form of measure.

B*******51- does the gauge ZERO when the engine is OFF (VERY important)?

    yes it does!

Just read through your suggested thread and when boat goes in for new water pump, thermostats I may as well just have them do the Poppet valve as well (I am assuming it is not that much more).

Not expensive if combining with some other service (especially one for which the cowlings are removed).
