2017 250 pro xs Stuck in gear

SER# 2B399392 128hrs. Water temp 38 F. Would not come out of forward gear when motor running, or off. Wasn't clicking into neutral, lever stiff, stopping just short of straight up. Idle RPMs normal 650"ish. (Previously posted WOT rpm's missing last zero) Made short run Worked after warm up, neutral, reverse, forward. Lever now worked with ease. When cold lever was stiff. During 100hr. service, Technician had replaced a "missing" cotter clip on the shift cable.
What could cause original clip to come off, if it did. Could this be cable out of sync , or is something binding in cold lower unit.

Excessive effort applied, attempting to shift when not running, bent or damaged shift components/linkages, or attempting to shift the engine when too cold (takes 60 seconds at idle in really cold temps to be able to get the case in and out of gear with any "nearly normal" effort.
