New to me 98 c40tlrx

I picked up a new to me boat yesterday put a new water pump in it blew out the lines from the pee hole had good air flow at lower unit and it is still not peeing.

Also I smelled smoke not exhaust smoke while it was running, after further investigation I found smoke coming from the mid section where the shifter rod is. what could that be from? The smoke smells electrical

Update, turns out the entire housing for the impeller needed to be changed. the housing and aluminum cup were melting together
