Covering/sealing thread
When building a rod, what do you put on the thread, and where do you buy it.

It's a thread finish epoxy applied with a small brush, you can buy it from Get Bit Outdoors, MudHole or Lure Parts online and other tackle crafting dealers.

If the thread is NCP (already has color preserver) you only need the 2-part epoxy finish. If the thread is standard nylon and you don't apply color preserver the threads will look wet and possibly be translucent when the 2-part is applied. It doesn't affect function but hurts the visual appeal.
The 2-part finish comes in low, medium, and high build. Low is thinner and requires more coats, high goes on thicker and usually is sufficient in one coat. If you don't have a drying motor, turn the rod in 1/4 turn increments every 10-15 minutes for a couple hours while the finish sets up, this avoids it being lopsided.

This is all I've used for years, I'd recommend getting the high build. Just like any epoxy the right proportions and mixing correctly is important.
