2003 Champion 187 Trolling Motor Shaft Length

    Hey folks,

I'm getting ready to buy an Ultrex and was wondering what length shaft everyone has? I currently have a 52" fortrex, but was wondering if anyone with a 187 has issues with a 45" in rough water. The 52" currently hangs way over the gunwale and I'd like to correct that withthe Ultrex.

    Thanks a lot!

For what it's worth, I'm running a 45" Ultrex on my 1999 Champ 181. Perfect length.

I have the short shaft on my 187, works great, it has come out of the water a little bit few times in really rough water, but still was able to hold my spot. Should have no issues with a Ultrex.

If you fish rough water at all, bare minimum is 48" Longer is better.

If you are used to the 52” stay with it, if you fish open water in big waves you will want it. Ive seen it first hand on my buddy’s 202, had a 52” and went to a 45 and had to change it back do to operating in big waves.
Ive always ran a 52 on mine, it has a little hang over but its manageable.

I have a 45" on my 187. FWIW, I'm a big guy too (270lbs) so that helps keep the bow down a bit more. Yet I've still had plenty of instances from just boat wake of the motor coming out of the water.

Get the 52" and have it cut down. I think I remember Jones Trolling motor saying he could do it.
