How would anyone know the reliability of a merc v8 4-stroke? They have only been out for a short while and not to mention, it is a totally new block to any 4-stroke they may have built in the past? Not knocking them, just hard to judge at this point in time. I would say we need at least a couple more years??

There are more mercury V8 4 strokes on bass boats then Hondas.

That still doesn’t mean they are reliable. How many have over 100 hours?

The one that has a good service shop near you. They are all good but when you need to service it, a close by reputable shop would be top priority for me...

Both are good motors as I have owned boats with both. I agree with other posters that for longevity the Honda can't be beat. Add the warranty and this decision is a no brainer. Honda definitely makes excellent products not only boat motors but generators, cars, motorcycles, etc. i have owned those as well with complete satisfaction. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Between those, and if you care about resale to the saltwater crowd, definitely the Honda. The saltwater guys here in the east seem to almost exclusively run Yamaha, with some Honda but very few Mercs.

Well if you break down in a bass boat it's likely you can make it back on the troller or find someone to tow you in. If you're out on the ocean and break down.....

Better see if the Mercury you want is available. I had a 200 Mercury v-8 ordered on a Tracker n waited about 6 weeks n no motor. Decided to go with a smaller Tracker with a 150 Mercury.

I repowered with a Honda 225 couple of years back and love the motor BUT, it did fail this past summer but Honda made it right. I think the nw Mercury is going to be a good motor but I never want a new anything in it's first year. Honda's aren't the fastest motor out there so if speed is what your after, keep looking. I'm around 4 - 5 MPH slower than the other enginees on similar hulls.

The DTS or auto computer trim mode .... gives great gas savings plus your always at the best trim for the speed and maneuver your putter the boat through controlled by the computer ... that is some pretty amazing things Plus the 2019 Mercury’s look sweet ... not to mention how easy the cowl is to take off now from inside boat and to check oil and add oil .... mercury hit home run with this engine imho ...

all that side honda is a fine 4 stroke engine as is evinrude as is Yamaha ... but imho the new mercury pro said 4 stroke is home run king of the hill at the moment

i was evinrude g2 guy since they were released ... my 2019 got the new mercury 4 stroke pro xs

The Honda has one lever in the front and you can lift the whole cowl of and set it on the deck to check the engine or oil! Not saying anything about the Mercury, but Honda has been building 4 strokes from day one!!
