    Cleaning rod cork

I recently bought a pre-owned rod with a cork handle and the previous owner had written the pound test line he had in it in permanent marker. It’s not that big of a deal I just don’t like the way it looks. Does anybody have any tips on how to clean it? I have not yet tried magic eraser but I doubt that would take permanent marker off. Is there any kind of cleaner or solvent I can use to clean it that won’t damage the cork? Let me know. Thanks guys!

If it is just a one time deal, use 220 or higher grit sandpaper. I have done this on several handles, just be careful with it.

magic eraser and warm water...then fill in any holes with elmers wood filler. Sand away all the excess and and clean it off and the cork will be as good as new.

Wash it with warm soapy water and a scrub brush. If the marking stays on after it dries, maybe GoofOff, and if that didn't work, use carburetor cleaner and a clean rag. If it was a permanent Magic Marker it may not come off and even sanding away the cork may not remove it.
I use wood filler to fill excessive voids after thorough cleansing if necessary. After that step, sanding is necessary.
I always try the least invasive method first.

Dawn dish soap first then go from there, maybe very light sanding.

To my surprise the magic eraser and warm water worked after about a half hour of hard scrubbing. Gonna sand it smooth and use the U-40 sealer in a few days. I appreciate everyone sending me their tips!

I have always used Simple Green and scrubbed with an old toothbrush. It usually only takes a few seconds to get the cork clean. But, I clean mine every winter. If there is a thick coat of crude built up, then something stronger might be needed.

If you fill with Elmer's wood filler, use Golden Oak to match the cork.
