    Mounting new fishfinder at console?

I have a 2018 PT 175, Looking at upgrading the console fish finder. I will probably go with a mount at the original location. Was interested to see if anyone has mounted a unit on the top of the console in front of the windshield, and if possible can post some pics. I will be getting either a 7 or 9 inch unit.

    Thanks.

I have a hard enough time seeing in front of me..can't imagine something on top of the console. I just picked up an HDS 7 and 9. I plan to use a balzout mount in the original mounting location. If I don't like the balzout, probably get a ram.

I have the big 2” ball Ram mount. Doesn’t move at all. And I must agree, you really would have a hard time seeing around it on top.

I agree that mounting on the front of the console would be problematic. I placed mine in the original location but made a base plate and backer plate out of 1/2" starboard for additional strength. I got that idea from board member Flex.

I used a 6" Balzout mount on the side of the console and it held a Helix 12 just fine. It was mounted where the factory lowrance was installed.

Thanks for all the replies. I felt the same way about the line of sight, but wanted to see if anyone had tried it or not.

PT 170 TX with two Humminbird 1198's and a Humminbird 798 at the console:

I changed mount types and this is a SOLIX 12 and ONIX 10 at the console:

Yesterday I had a Helix 12, Helix 10 and Helix 7 at the console. Didn't take a picture of that. I sort of mess with stuff.

Would love to see pics of how the mount is attached for the graph nearest the windshield.
I have a 9" Carbon mounted in the factory location via RAM swing arm, but have contemplated adding a 7" above the gauges.

This is the same setup i have and its been trouble free. The console area is just the right sized for the base to bolt down. Very solid.

I have a 9" Carbon mounted in the factory location via RAM swing arm, but have contemplated adding a 7" above the gauges.
At first I removed the gas gauge and put a 1/4" piece of acrylic on the front and backside of the dash with a C size RAM ball mount with cable block. Then I decided to make the setup more sturdy for larger units and had a bracket made to be sandwiched in with the ball mount and anchored to the top of the console. I made a few "L" brackets to bolt to that depending on the display height I wanted. I use different heights depending on if the unit is touch screen or buttons. With the large units, I invert the gimbal bracket and it hangs on the L bracket held in place with #10 screws.
This is when I was still working on the spacing and shape of the L brackets:

This is a Helix 5 attached to the ball mount. I do the Helix 7 that way also since their gimbal mounts are narrower and the units are relatively light.
I remove the L bracket when in use so it doesn't block the internal GPS antenna.

Flex, and Goldstar did you guys glue the starboard down, or use long screws through the ram base to secure it?

I have the same mount. I use long bolts with large fender washers, and lock nuts.

I used long screws through the ram base and also used some of the 1/2" starboard as a backer plate under the console.

Does it work well in this way? I can’t imagine how strong the RAM mount should be to hold the fish finder steady when the boat is running in waves.
