Interesting--- I have an older 30 pitch with no holes.. It has an added flair and re-stamped as a 29...With my 1.75's it gets out Ok with a load and a trim tab..

I just bought a brand new 29 pitch that has 4 PVS holes I hope to run it next week and see how they compare.. One will be for sale>>

On my XB-21 300XS with 1.62’s, it was hard to find any prop with acceptable hole shot in my opinion. I have since swapped to 1.75’s and love it. When I run my smaller props, 26ET, Promax 26, 25 Hydro the hole shot is blistering. With my 28 and 30 promax, my hole shot is now quite good.

So what is the reason it seems that most people with 21ft Allison's and 300HP motors go with 1.62 gears? Is it the desire to achieve the highest possible top end speed?

Great question. We will see. We plan on running my 300xs with 1.75's and a 2+2 XB21 250xs with 1.62's soon. This should answer the speed question. Both boats have very consistent top end numbers. We will do before and after testing with several props. We hope to do the switch at the ramp to get the best comparison we can. I personally don't think it matters that much for top end speeds we run. Jay and Nathan are putting up some great numbers with 1.75's and Tim's 300R will as well.

I personally like 1.62's, but I don't like to spin over 6,000rpm. I will say I run in a cooler climate now, so that helps. All my 100mph props run under 5,900 rpm. Even my 28's typically spin 6100-6200 in the warmer months.

My reason for going with 1.62's with this motor BOb is that I already had 1.75's on a 250 and i was curious to see what it would be like with different gears. For me only, I'm in agreement with MET on 1.75's being more fun and quicker. I now have a spare sporty case 1.75's and when I ran it last summer with a 28 XOB and a 28 bravo it felt like my old 250 did...popped right up on plane on hole shot and took off like a rocket

The 1.62:1 gears usually produce 2 mph on the top end when propped correctly over the 1.75's propped correctly, but you do give up hole shot and mid range punch.

Thats a great question. When I got mine 4 years ago, I think the vast majority of owners were running 250’s on the XB-21, so I don’t think there was a lot of history on trying to prop a 300xs on that hull. With that said, I just think the idea was with 1.62’s, would be easier to find props in the right pitch with the taller gears.

If I were about running wide open, and/or ran water where long hi speed runs were possible and/or I were capable of driving to speeds above 90 comfortably, I might put my 1.62’s back in. I love the 1.75’s for my applications way too much!

For me, the reason I have been going with 1.62's is mostly because of bad information back when I started getting into high performance boating. I was trying to follow the best advice I could get and the consensus of the guys I talked with who ran Bullets, Allison's and Stroker's at that time was the 1.75's were slower in a big way and the 1.62's were much faster. I got 1.62's multiple times and learned the boat and motor setups pretty well and have stayed there out of habit more than practicality. In reality, now that I am older and have many seasons and hours of seat time, the 1.75's def would not do anything but make me happy because of the hole shot. Other than losing a couple mph on top end and having to go with a little bigger wheel, they are just another option that makes sense depending on what you what out of your boat/motor.

I also understand that the 300 has less exhausted gas around the prop than a 250 does to begin with. I think the exhaust can ports more gas out the above water port.

    This statement right here!!!

I don't regret getting my 300 with the 1.62's it's still a fun engine and like Lee stated if propped correctly it does the job. Now that I have the 1.75 case as a spare and it is on my motor right now I may just leave it on for the start of next season since my 1.62 case is on it's way today for Sanderson Marine to be repaired. I'm sure I'll have it back before March (hear that Lee?) also with the mods but I want to play around with a few props I've been thinking of getting for this 1.75 case. AND I have my 28 Promax prop back with the flare ring removed so I'm anxious to test it as well

When it comes to hole shot it seems to me no mater what gear ratio you have you could make the hole shot equal with propeller pitch but the top end may suffer on the 1.75. I will be really interested in river rockets testing of the two gear ratios with data to prove the findings

We typically see a 400 RPM difference between 1.62 and 1.75s...typically you can compensate by dropping down 2 pitch.

If you want holeshot go 1.75s,
If you want every last tenth and make long runs go 1.62

I had zero issues fishing with full wells, full fuel, 2 people, and all our crap on 1.62s and did so with 30 pitch props and still turned them 6150 on the big end.

If I needed to hole jump I would drop down to a 27 xob. It would turn 6400+ with 2 people, full fuel, livewell, etc.

But my use and setup is not typical, I frequently make 50+ mile one way, non stop runs and i want every tenth of a mph that I can get. One of my good friends is running a 21/250/26p on 1.62s and I can run him down in short order.
