    Well, today was an abortion!

At 1:00 am this morning, we lost power. My wife uses a CPAP machine, so she got very little sleep without it. When I got up to pee, I walked into the edge of our bathroom door and got a nice cut above my right eye. The power was still out this morning and the house was 62 degrees. We had planned to leave for our son and DIL’s new home in Franklin, TN at 7:00 am. But, with the power off, we didn’t want to leave until it came back on, which the power company estimated would be 11:00 am. So we waited. At 10:00 am they revised their estimated repair time to 11:30 PM! That’s it...our daughter and SIL came over with coolers and we packed up the fridge and freezer and they took the food over to their house and we left for TN at 12:00 noon. 30 minutes into the trip, we got a text that power had been restored, so the wait and packing up the food was wasted effort.

The traffic in Columbus was a nightmare, as usual. But, the 2 hour traffic jam 20 miles past Columbs was a real treat! There had been a traffic accident involving a semi. The delay there meant that we hit Cincinnati at rush hour. Once we got past Cincinnati traffic thinned out some. Of course, driving the interstate in the dark at 75 mph through the heart of deer county was not fun. We finally made it here to Franklin, TN at 11:30 pm Eastern time. 11 1/2 hours of driving for what is supposed to be an 8 1/2 hour trip.

My wife has made this drive twice before and she’s never done it in less than 10 hour because of the traffic around Nashville, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Columbus. So, when we go back home on Tuesday, we’re going another route...I-40 east to Knoxville, I-81 north to Wytheville, and I-77 home. Google says it’s 1:15 minutes longer, but the traffic should flow more smoothly and no big cities to deal with. I’d bet it will take less time. I’m glad this day is over!

Sorry about your luck. Hope things change for the trip home. 81 through Wytheville is a nice drive. And you're right I bet it does take less time with less traffic. Traffic in big cities makes my blood boil. Got a late start last week leaving town and had to fight Memphis during afternoon rush hour. Those people are nuts there!

Driving to Knob Creek for sub gun matches always sucked because of the traffic through Nashville.

Glad you made it safe! The eye will heal, and the groceries are ok. Enjoy your Thanksgiving.

As for that route home, my BIL lives in Johnson City, made that I-40-I81 trek many a times. It’s normally smooth sailing sans Knoxville and the occasional wreck. I can’t speak for the truck through the great white north LOL. Last time I worked in Columbus I went through Louisville and Cincy, no issues to speak of other than we had several inches of snow on the ground when I left.

    HA !!!

Sounds like my trip to FL from VA around Xmas 1 year.

Left VA in a snow storm that was a 1/2 a day early, and was only supposed to bring 4" or so....but turned out to be 18".

Normally, it takes me ~ 16 hrs to get there with my daughter (potty breaks, food, etc), but this time, it took us 11 hrs just to get INTO NC (normal time would be 1 1/2 hrs), and then another 25 hrs to get to FL.

Traffic was bumper to bumper moving at about 1/2 speed all the way down to south GA for some reason....roads were clear, but still took forever. At least in VA/NC, there was snow on the roads to account for the slow down.

That 16 hr trip took us 36 hrs that time.

Might look at going through Indy and Evansville, Indiana. Mostly interstate from Indy to the river now. Indy traffic isn’t like the river cities because there is no bridge to bottleneck things. That would let you skip Cincy and Louisville.

If he can get home that way Catfan the Pennyrile to I-69 is a clear shot from what I understand. There was construction down to one lane a few weeks ago when I came through there from KY.

May want to look into a battery backup option for the CPAP.
Goal Zero Yeti has a nice 400W option, not unreasonable.
This would allow you to use any device.

    https://www.goalzero.com/shop/power-...power-station/

The other option ... my current choice of solution.
Philips DreamStation GO with the battery option attached.
Of course, this one will sting a little.

I went with the secondary unit and battery for a few reasons.
Second home, packability, redundancy for storms, snap on battery.

I can sleep without it. But I'm much more comfortable with it on me.
It's never fun to not be able to sleep, or sleep safely, at night.

You can buy cheap inverter from harbor freight ......hook it to boat battery and power that CPAP.
They also have all types of battery powered CPAPS and battery back ups for CPAPS.
Lots of options from very low $'s to high.

Thats a good idea. Thanks for the info. I’ll look into it when I get home.

TJ: We looked into a CPAP with a battery backup when she got a new machine a while back. But as you said, lots of $.

I'm aware, that's why I mentioned the Yeti ... works great for charging devices too.
And if you'll watch the internet, deals do pop up this time of the year, camping season is over.
Last year, Home Depot (I'm pretty sure) knocked about $100 off the price of the 400W.
