    Why are these sockets up so high ??

    Only thing I could think of would be an old set of emergency lights that plugged in vs wired directly through a flush mounted box.

    He may have had a projector mounted up that high to broadcast on a screen....We used to have plugs in the ceilings for the projectors for PowerPoint presentations in the military..
    If you look at the 2nd pic it looks like the ceiling was repaired, so they may had to patch some mounting holes..

    Or... I recently installed one like that for a flat screen TV on an adjustable arm. If this is older construction however, that wouldn't likely be the answer.

    Some builders put outlets in the soffits for Christmas lights.

    At one time CO2 detectors were required to be plugged into an outlet in some applications. They are normally installed near the ceiling. That's my guess....

    Are they switched? If so they could have went to some sort of hanging light that plugged into them.

    My Brothers house has receptacles in the lid like that...He found out from his neighbor that the previous owners had "Grow lights".....You Know......to grow all their own salad supplies.....

    Is that in a motel/hotel? Looks like it with the fire alarm. I've seen this in motels before but don't know why
