    Another what's it worth question

The transmission in my truck is messing up. It'll lurch when shifting from first to second and occasionally shudder at slow speeds. The shop estimated $3,800 to fix it. I can't see putting that much into a 2002 F150 XLT, 5.4 liter with 163,000 miles. It has a couple dents but otherwise in decent shape.

So I'm thinking of selling it as is and buying something newer. What's it worth?

NADA price minus $3,800 for the transmission work should get you in the ballpark.

Get another estimate, but if the truck in good running order is worth at least 3800 then I would fix it. The truck is not gonna be worth much at all with the bad transmission.

I think I will get another estimate. Can't believe I didn't think of checking NADA value. It says $6k clean retail so I'm guessing 5k with the dents which actually takes me to what I was guessing of $1000 as is. I'll just have to see what other estimates I can get.

    Thanks

Even if you had to pay 3800 which i bet you won't, could you buy something for 4800 dollars in better shape and low milage than what you have? Here you could just get an aftermarket exchange out for 2500 all inclusive and a one year warranty on the tranny.

163k is not a lot of miles for a truck.

I'd get another estimate. $3800 seems way too high for a transmission repair.

Had the transmission rebuilt in my 2003 Sierra (78,000 miles) for $975.00. I’d look for another shop. That sounds like a dealer price.

Depends on the transmission there were two different ones in the F-150 4r100 and 4r70w most common is 4r70w but still a complete rebuild in and out shouldn't cost no more than 1200 to 1500 $$

3800 sounds to me like they are gonna just put another transmission in it and not fix or rebuild anything.

probably pricing one from the dealer too, or some other super expensive place

I had mine rebuilt last year in my 2004 Ford Expedition with the 5.4. It was $3000 with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. 2 days ago I blew a head gasket and looking at another $2000 to fix it.

Wow, I'm glad I asked! It was a dealership but wouldn't have thought they'd be THAT much higher. If I can get it done for $2k or less then I'll keep it. By the way, they quoted $4,600 for a remanufactured transmission.

    This^^^^
Dealer won't get near value on trade and trying to sale a defective vehicle will be a pain. Traded my 2001 Ford Super crew no dents and 190,000 miles a couple weeks ago. Dealer offered 1,000 and I took it because I don't have time to deal with a vehicle sale.

That truck should still have lots of life left in it and $3800 is much cheaper than buying another truck.
