    A-Rig Rod?

Ideally I'd like a rod that is 7'6" - 8' Casting Rod with Heavy Power and Moderate Fast Taper that is rated for baits 1 - 4 oz. But most the 7'6" Rods are Fast or Extra Fast rods for Flipping.

I have a rod I use now for smaller A-Rigs and Swimbaits weighing no more than 1/2 oz - 1 oz. It is 7'3" MH with a Moderate Fast Taper which I really like. However I don't think it's not long or powerful enough to sling a larger A-Rig that weighs 2-4 oz.

So what I am wondering is anyone using 7'6" - 8' Rods with a Fast or Extra Fast taper? Any advantages for this pattern? Or should I keep trying to find a rod in that length / power with a slower taper?

My school of thought is a moderate fast taper will aid the type of cast I'd use with this rig and allow the fish that moment to turn with on bait (just like with crankbaits and other swimbait techniques) for better hookups. I would be using 65 LB Braid with this setup.

Powell Endurance 765SBR on the light side, 795CEF would work for bigger stuff. Both have sort of a moderate/fast taper.

Do you guys find there's an advantage with the Moderate Taper with regards to Casting and setting the hook? I have a couple punching rods that are more than heavy/long enough now, but they have a F / XF Taper so I wonder if that would hinder those elements of the pattern.

I have been slinging Yum Flash Mob Jrs. With Keitech 3.8’s hard lately. Conquest 904 has been amazing for me.

I think the moderate taper is primarily for casting, or lobbing, heavy baits a good distance. I use this 765SBR as a jig rod. Not sure if that's the best application.

Interesting. I was planning to use my Conquest 905 for rigs this year. Out of curiosity, what reel are you using? I have a Shimano Tranx and it’s almost too big.

Tranx is definitely too big. I use a Metanium MGL 7.4:1 with 18 lb Sniper. I was skeptical at first but honestly that ARig with 1/8 oz Dirty Jigs heads fishes like a big spinnerbait. I have done really well with it this year and caught anything from 12 inch Spots to a 10 lbs. largemouth.

Man yal got deeper pockets then me to be using $600 rods and $400 reels for a bama rig lol
Really any 7'6 medium heavy or stronger will do good. The tatula 150 is a good reel for a bama rig.

The NRX 916 rod is made for this technique and is perfect for any size rig. It loads well with the cast and keeps fish buttoned when they bite. Have caught some big smallies on this rod. It also functions and a great spoon rod too. Its expensive but worth it. You can find them for $300-$350 on here in the Rods for Sale section.

I use an old junky skeet reese a rig rod and it doubles as my big spoon rod. I gave like $40 for it and its performed flawlessly. If it snaps tommorow, no big deal. I think the a rig is one technique people put too much into sensitivity. If you touch somethin youre hung and if a fish hits it you know it. This is coming from a guy that uses all NRX's for bottom contact baits so im not hatibg on higher end rods, just the a rig is overkill to spend that kind of money. When i very first started throwing it i did spend a day throwing it on a rod tgat was entirely too light and it flat out wore me out
They aint got hands, set the hook

I had that rod, handle was too short for me.

I use a 8' IMX Pro 966 SWBR paired with a Calcutta 400D for rigs and magnum spoons now.

I like the Dobyns Champion 794 and 795SB rods. I stepped down to the 794 this year and its a great rod for rigs and I like it better than the 795 for medium size glide baits.
