Thumbs down Never seen an electrical connection like this!

I bought my little Triton in June of this year and have always noticed a...ball in the trolling motor wiring. Well it’s been pulling the plug loose so it was time to see what this was.

When I got 3 miles of electrical tape off I discovered this!

Instead of soldering the connections when the trolling motor plug went bad someone apparently took 4 big ass washers and bolted them together! Then they wrapped each side with enough tape to kill a horse then they taped them together...unreal!

I thought someone installed a ferrite at first but your second photo answered that question.

That's a first for me also. and I've seen a lot of southern engineering.. Surprised they didn't use duct tape.

The solder and soldering iron together probably cost less than the nut bolt and washers not to mention the tape.

Not to mention iron is not the best electrical conductor.

I am ashamed it took me this long to tear the tape off...it looked like a ball there was so much tape. Would you really believe THAT is what was in there??

Yeah the soldering iron and solder took 10 minutes and now it’s fixed. Live and learn; what can I say.

It is kinda funny though right?

Maybe it was an “on the water” repair that never got followed up on once they got home.

Couple of found fender washers and two rolls of Harbor Freight electrical tape.
    What could go wrong?

This is what i was thinking, somebody had a buncha odds and ends thrown in the boat and fixed it on the water or in the motel parking lot. It worked and they didnt wanna waste that $0.68 worth of electrical tape they used. I work on cars for a living and you wouldnt believe some of the crap we see

Time to do it up right. If you cut the plus wire to the motor back a little and the minus wire to the boat back a little so the cuts aren't next to each other your splices or the repairs won't be next to each other and you'll have less of a lump.
I've seen that connector interface get corroded and fail a lot, it you're going to keep it you might look for a better replacement.
