99 Merc EFi 200hp oil leak help

    Serial # OG824976

Have oil weeping out of the holes in front of the lower unit (not lower unit fluid) and when removing the lower unit to replace water pump, oil was running down the shaft. Obviously this is a seal leak from up top somewhere, but I am not sure where. What is recommended and how much $$$ could we possibly be talking here?

    Thanks for the help.

Have gearcase pressure tested to confirm where it is leaking, then once leak is located, replace seal (or seals) as necessary or appropriate.

Likely driveshaft seals or shift shaft seals (often from over-filling gear lube).

    Thanks a load, kind sir.

Is this a spendy repair and is it dangerous to run the motor?

Normally not too bad, unless it's had a lot of water in it (and access to air to promote corrosion/rusting of internal parts).

I would not recommend running with a known leak.
