I just purchased a 1990 190SC with steering problems (and other problems) It has a dual cable system and the steering was really stiff. So i was looking into some different options going hydraulic or replacing both cables. Turns out only one of my cables is tight. So I purchased new cable for $145. 145 is along way from 1000 for a new hydraulic system. If it is a dual cable system i would figure out if both are bad or just 1. I work around pneumatic and hydraulic valves and cylinders everyday. I see them fail alot. 1 of the main reasons i didnt go with hydraulic steering plus it is alot of money. just my 2cents.

One more question, I still kick around the idea of cleaning and lubing my old dual cable rack system. I'm pretty sure they are 12' cables. Is it feasible to use that system with a hydraulic jackplate?

Yup 12 foot cables is the normal lenght as you can go to a 6 inch plate if you go to an 8 inch plate you will need 13 foot cables and i see no reason why cable won't work on a hydralic jackplate.

Cool I was just thinking of the up and down stress on the cables. I plan to use that function a lot.

Love the Seastar on my Champion but wouldn't have it on my Allison. To me hydraulic takes more getting used to driving at higher speeds than a cable system. Although it can be done. Love the 184! Wish I had a really nice one. I would keep it from now on.
