    Which prop

    I have a x54 with a 90 Yamaha

I currently have a power tech 4 blade rxb4 16". This prop only let's my engine run at 5100rpm wot with just me in the boat and does not give good lift.

I spoke to power tech and he recommend I try a 3 blade nrs 15". It seems like the 3 blade in a 15" would be to little. Am I wrong?

What prop would y'all suggest that will give me good lift and speed?

    Re: Which prop (t-bubba)

I run a nrs powertech on my H-18 with no complaints. I run it about 3.5" below pad with no blowout and good bow lift. I cant comment on the pitch other then when going from a 4 blade to 3 blade you usually go up in pitch and down in pitch when going to 3 blade to a 4 blade.

    Re: Which prop (t-bubba)

K' is right about up/down 1" on 3bl-4bl ....... however, at the same time you need to get those rpm's up if you're only seeing 5100 @ WOT.

1"p = 200rpm's (typically) when trying to change rpm's with the same model prop .........

    so THEORETICALLY speaking ..... you're currently at 5100 w/16p 4bl .....
    so a 17p 3 bl SHOULD = same (based on 4bl SS -to- 3bl SS = +1") ..... thus = 5100rpm
    Then there's the 1"p = 200rpm THEORY ...... you need 400rpm, which = 2"p
needing to gain 400rpm's means -2" ..... which means 15"p

Sounds right to me ........ but keep in mind that this is THOERY ..... and prop design plays a HUGE part in rpm's and how it (prop design) effects your hull ..... ie lift, etc. So make sure you print all this theory on toilet paper so it will be worth something.

Hopefully someone with a X54/90 combo will be through here shortly.

If you are headset on another Powertech .... I would think the PTR series (3bl or 4bl) would be a better choice. I know the 'NRS Series' reads as if it was a Turbo clone ............ but I also know that my Powertech PTR4 17"p runs very similar to my Turbo 1 17"p.

Good Luck! Hopefully someone with your combo will come along and be able to give you better info than me rambling.

I asked about the Ptr and he recommended the Nrs. Said that the Ptr may be to aggresive

I guess I just need to go to the local power tech dealer and try a few

    Re: (t-bubba)

Stephen has both of my old props on his little rig,and i will throw this in.On my boat which is a bigger boat than his,the powertechs will NOT keep the bow lifted like the Turbos will unless you have the motor really low.The turbo will keep my boat lifted at 2 1/2" below pad where the PTR powertech will fall off pad a 4 1/4" below pad.On your rig i would say the 15" Turbo 3 blade would be good. Now if you want a little better performance i would hang a 10'' jackplate on it and go with a 17" Turbo 3 blade. On my H51 the 10" plate was worth 5 mph GPS alone, and a 6" was worth 3 mph. Also if your really wondering about Hydrotec mods, the head, tuner, reeds, and rejetting gained 2 mph.

    Re: (xpress spanky)

    Thanks for the tips

Would I have enough slack in the steering and cables for a 10". I am going to add a jackplate and a new prop.

If I ever want to go fast I'd see a bigger motor on the back lol

My boat did have enough slack for a 10",but just barely. The 6" will fit on about everyone of them, and the 10" on most.

    Re: (xpress spanky)

I looked at my cables... I think I'd have enough in everything but my steering... it seems pretty tight.

should go go with a jackplate or new prop first?

I went fishing the other day by myself.. with half a tank of gas, full livewell, small ice chest and my fishing gear and me(290) I was able to get it to hold 41mph at 5100 WOT and keep it on the pad.

    Re: (t-bubba)

I would do the prop first.Just remember when you put a jackplate on your RPM's will go up. Also your safe to turn that motor to 6000 rpms even thou Yamaha says max of 5500.

    Re: (xpress spanky)

yea thats what I was thinking also

I did some reading on the turbo props... I believe thats what I will go with.

you think with the 6" jackplate that the 15" turbo would be good or would I turn up to many rpm and need to go to a 16"

A 16" would be ideal, but they don't make it. You either have to do the 15" or a 17",and i believe the 15" would be the best. You could always send a 15" to Mark and let him work it to a 16".

i am going to try to find a place local that would have a 15" to let me test run.

    Update.

the 90 threw a rod and the boat now has a 115sho hanging off the back. It has a solas Saturn 13x19 that the dealer put on. The prop is crap and won’t lift the bow without blowing out and I can hit the 6600 rev limiter with ease. Also added a 6” manual jack plate. I am thinking about going with a 21 turbo if I can find one. What are y’all thoughts?

I defer to Xpress Spanky but think the Turbo 21 or a Yamaha K20 would work quite well.
