You can literally vacuum pack water if you want. Also the bags are about $0.10 each and they come in a wide variety of sizes and styles. It is significantly better than the textured bag system but admittedly more expensive. I vacuum pack almost everything. Here is a link on their cheaper entry level model: https://www.webstaurantstore.com/ary...VMASVP112.html Definitely and upgrade from the Foodsaver type machines and bags.

I bought the exact same one two years ago of that site. I do a lot of hunting and fishing like most on here and hands down the best investment made in years. Buying the 1000ct bags i have 4 sizes including a ziploc vacuum bag and love them. It was a hard one to justify spending the 600 on but i'd do it again tomorrow knowing what i know now. look into it as you can do more than just bags in it if your wife does canning of sorts and you want to put them in there it works great for that as well.

Not to mention the wife and I sous vide 3 times a week. It's great and I'd definitely recommend it. Prior to the Big Game purchase, I bought the Foodsaver from Costco and had to return it. Wouldn't seal right. However, the Big Game can seal 200+ pounds of elk in one sitting with zero issues.
Costco sells a few models. Do you remember which one you had?

Don’t buy the complete POS (FoodSaver FM5380) sold at Sam’s. Hard to operate, and finicky as hell to seal bags. I wouldn’t recommend one. I have two friends with the GameSaver series (2100 series) that have been going for years. I’ll be getting rid of my current one, and getting a GameSaver, and a separate handheld for bags.

Thanks for the tip. I was in Sam’s today and saw that one. They are offering an extra $30 off making it tempting. Glad I wasn’t ready to pull the trigger.

They have it priced at $99 right now. I am hoping that it is reduced more next week.

Now that you have had it for a while do you like it? Any problems?

Ollie's has remanufactured Food Saver one for $29.99 in their flyer. Also Aldi has one advertised for $34, not sure the brand.

For the price and what it does that is a good price. I have still yet to use the wand attachment though. I dont have the special containers.

This one came with 1 small container and 6 zip lock bags push some other stuff. The containers are a little pricey but appear well made and the vacuum seal is replaceable. The Foodsaver site seems to offer some good deals from time to time. But you need to watch the site often to catch the real good ones.

So here is what I don't understand. What are the containers really good for? I'm sure there is a purpose which I just don't realize. When I'm using my sealer I'm typically looking to freeze something long term. If say I have a soup all I have to do is put some in a bag and freeze. Once solid I vac seal. How would the containers be any better?

Talk about old....I have a Foodsaver V840 (easily 15 yrs old)......it's a manual clamshell style unit that has 3 choices...vac & seal, extended vacuum & seal, and just seal.

It is getting to where it takes a lot longer to seal, and the vac isn't as good, so I am looking to replace it.

On the special containers, I have one, and I use it for storing brown sugar....the vacuum, keeps it from getting moisture in it and hardening up.

Well that is an idea I had not thought about. I'm cooking for one so stuff like brown sugar / flour / sugar / etc tends to go bad before I use it. This could help eliminate that issue.

I like to freeze soup. Pour it in the bag, hit vacuum for a second, then hit seal. I lay it flat in the freezer.

Making pea soup right now. Found a bag of frozen soup from a while ago and mixed it in.

I have looked at all of the Foodsaver models and have read several of the instruction manuals. If I want my wife to use it it appears that the 5800 is the model that will work best for us.

    Anyone use this model?

Looks to be about the same as I have which is the 4980. Auto bag detect and wand attachment. Works well.

Sorry for the late response, I was up north on my late archery elk hunt. I checked the Costco website seeing if they had the one I had to return, looks like they don't have that model up there anymore. But here it is on Amazon....it does not get a recommendation from me.

That’s essentially the same model they have at Sam’s Club. The design is simply too hard to use effectively. Hard to hold a bag, press in the right spot to activate it, and get a good seal at the same time. POS.
