    285 Pro Repowering Question

Hey guys, I have a 1990 Stratos 285 Pro with a Johnson gt200 on it. The boat is only rated for a 175 so I'm not sure why the 200 is on there, but that's the way it was bought new (I'm the second owner). Anyway, I'm about tired of feeding this old johnson premium gas and dealing with it in the cold weather so I'm considering repowering.

Found a 150 HO Evinrude G2 (technically makes around 165 hp), would this motor push my boat like I'm used to with the current setup? I have a 25 pitch renegade on it and it will do about 66 fully loaded, 70 with just me. Just don't want to spend all this money and lose 10 mph and not be able to get out of the hole. Thanks!

You’ll lose 8-10 mph going to the 150 from the 200. I just repowered a 2004 285 ProXL to a 150 HO G2 and I’m still playing with props and motor height. My boat was rated for 150. The torque on the G2 is unreal and I went from a 24 Raker to 25 Tempest and I believe the G2 can turn a 26 Raker on my boat.

Your average 285 w/ 150 is a low 60MPH boat. I do think if set up right with the right prop you will get 65 + or - 1-2
If you can afford it you should do it, it will make you happy!!

What speeds are you seeing and what rpms with the prop setups you mentioned?

i gained 8-9 mph when i went from my old johnson 200 to the g2 HO 200. I don't think you will lose much if anything especially with the HO. you might have to run less pitch on the RAKER HO as my 24 pitch is more like 25-25.5.

I doubt you’ll lose 8-10 mph from the old Johnson 200 to the G2 150 HO

With my old Johnson 150 and Raker 24 I got 62 at 5400. Best so far with the 25 Tempest+ has been 59 at 5750 3-3/8" prop to pad. I have a Croxton 25 that hits 6000 rpm but no better speed, might need more cup.
