Shimano metanium '13 spool issue

My '13 met has been a solid reel, as of recently the spool will spin when I set the hook on a fish, not enough to free spool but like the button is pushed a little but not all the way, I thought maybe my thumb was dragging on the button but that's not the case, and the drag is set fairly tight, anyone have any ideas on what to look at to diagnose this?

You got braid on that spool? Did you tie through a hole in the spool, tape the braid to the spool, or use some mono backing? You may have braid slipping on the spool if you didnt do any of those and you are using braid

I understand what you mean, but that's not the issue, I'm thinking pinion gear? I have to push the button to re engage then start reeling again.

Clutch or pinion ramp most likely. Dan

If, when I tear into it, will a problem with the clutch or pinion be noticable?

Hard to say without seeing., but I doubt it's the gear. PDan
