    Question Breaker Size 36 VDC

    Installed Fortrex 36 VDC 112 thrust with 6 gauge wire. What size amp breaker is recommended?

    Thanks for link!! I posted something earlier about wire size and was advised to run 6 gauge. Minn Kota advice is 8 gauge. Thoughts

    The conductor gauge chart that MinnKota is using goes up to 25' and does show 8ga for the 112. However, if the boat is big enough for a 112, it is probably somewhere between a 19' and 22' boat. Lets use a 20' boat for example. With a 20' boat you will have somewhere around 45' of wire, or an additional 20' that MinnKota's chart does not take into consideration. Remember, on DC wiring you have to go from negative back to positive -- and across all the jumpers. While it's true that anywhere the amps are measured on that wire, it is going to be apx 52A (suggested amp draw for the 112), the length of the wire will dictate the diameter of the wire (gauge) that needs to be used to help eliminate resistance and voltage drop. This is the reason to use 6ga on that long of run.

    Minn Kota's table does correctly consider total wire lengths..... It is being expressed as stated here:

    *Wire Extension Length refers to the distance from the batteries to the trolling motor leads.
    So 8AWG according to MinnKota (and as well well published wire tables*) would have been adequate for your install < 25' run (~50 feet for total circuit) and have fully met the no more than 5% voltage loss at max amp draw needs of your trolling motor.


    (50 feet of 8AWG results in a voltage loss of no more than 5% of the trolling motor batteries total voltage output.)
