I am looking at options for diagnostic scan tools for a pair of 2004, 150hp optimax.
i see the CDI Meds, mercury DDT units and aftermarket scan tools like techmate pro. What are people using? And can you just buy the software for a laptop without dropping 600-700 bucks?
any ideas would be welcome.

Check out Diacom Software. About the most cost-effective (it's not as good as the OEM/Dealer setup, but it's a good value for the DIY'er or independent guy).
