Question 2005 merc xr6 150 hp tach issues

I have a 2005 merc xr6 150 hp. With a tach that is going crazy. My serial number is 1B029436. I was idling out of idle zone about 1500 rpms, came out of hole up to about 36 mph and my tach was topped out. Not sure what is going on. What would be the setting number on back of tach for this model? Could it be a regulator? How do I switch the wiring from current one to the other one? Any help and suggestions is appreciated.
    thanks Dave

If you have a small dial on back of tach, note what position it is in and move the dial back and forth, may need small screwdriver. They get corrosion on the contacts. Just make sure you put back in original position.

A bad regulator typically makes the tach inoperable. One regulator will have tach on gray wire, if you have two.

+1... remember to NOTE THE CURRENT POSITION of the switch before you move it back and forth (as you will need to return it to that position).
