Thanks for the info! I've been wanting to do this mod. Pretty sure I read about it somewhere else.

2004 Stratos 201 Pro XL with 2004 Yamaha 250 HPDI
Took mine out this week. Works great! I can't believe I wasn't walking before. I doubt I had a gallon of gas in it. I can't believe they came from the factory with those senders. This is a must do mod.

Karl, I am going to replace my sending unit over the winter. Your post gave me hope changing mine out will be worth it not to lug extra gas not needed for a day of fishing.
I looked at the link where you purchased the unit from. The diagram says a mininum 1" clearance from bottom of tank?
How much clearance did you have from the bottom of your taank with the new sending unit installed?

I doubt I had an inch. It was not hitting though. It works great, just put that one in. The way the tank is shaped, if you leave a lot of room on the bottom, its going to act just like the factory sender.
Stick what year-model stratos you have and what was the length of the sender you used?

2003, I used the 13.5" sender
Ok, i removed my Wema fuel sender.
Current sending unit measures 13-1/8" long from bottom of sender to where metal flange bolts on top of tank
TANK Depth measures 15-3/8" from bottom of tank and tape measure is flush with the tank opening.
A difference of 2-1/4" between sending unit and tank depth.
What would be the correct length to get?
Thanks!
Fishers supply has 14-1/2" long or a 15"
Thinking the 14-1/2" would leave just under 3/4" from bottom of tank.
Ordered the 14-1/2" .

Got it installed just now not to hard and reads just under 1/2 which appears right based on level in tank.
Ran mine almost empty. The last spot to run back to camp the engine missed because it was running out of gas while getting on plane. The gauge had just got to E. Filled it up and put 45 gallons in a 51 gallon tank. Pretty close to me. Glad mine is correct now.

Even then it showed a 1/4 tank it was 1/2 full.
Explains why it seemed to spill only after pumping 20 gallons of fuel.
I am pretty happy with mine too, it is reading really close. Alot better than what it has since I bought it.
I put on a Ultrex this winter and I love it. I hope nothing happens to it, they are expensive. But the spot lock and auto pilot are great. I was fishing a rip rap bank yesterday and I would set the auto pilot and it held me straight with river current and crosswind. When I caught I fish, I hit the spot lock until I was done and then back to auto pilot. I love this thing
Still good so far. How well do the batteries hold up using the spot lock?
My 2003 Stratos 201 Pro XL will read almost empty when there is over 20 gallons of gas left in the boat. I had a 2015 Mercury 250 Pro XS put on a few years ago, I recently had the Mercury Smart gauge installed and this solved my issues. It is extremely accurate, I always know exactly how much gas in my boat. It is a nice change for sure.
Smartcraft gauges are nice. When the boat was built if they had only placed a 14.5" sending unit it would have fixed the issue.
I have not had an issue with batteries yet, I have 2 group 31 Deka wet cell batteries. I use the "cruise" more than the spot lock so far because I have been river fishing and trolling upstream. I am not sure they would make a 12 hour day though but havent been out that long yet. Still kind of cold here in Md so I dont go out until 9 and come in by 4PM
