I had a L1 case on my 2004 200HO but damaged it by hitting a log while loading my boat. Dealer tried to repair it but it did not last long. I replace it with a magnum case. I will take a L1 case all day long over the magnum. It boils down to performance. My boat is a turd compared to the performance I had with the L1.

L1 would be the choice compared to the other 2. Parts for the L2 are getting rare, and were no better case than the L1. The Magnum case is durable, but is as you described. A lot of guys are going back to a standard V-6 case, and putting a Bob's nose cone low water pickup kit on. This allows you to find parts easily if you need them, and have good water pressure at elevated engine heights. Plus, handling is good. Hydromotive engineering is also a good choice for LWPU kits.

The L1 uses all the internal parts as the standard V-6 cases (except propshaft) The L2 is unique because it uses different style gears, forward and rear bearing carriers. You can tell the difference from the design of the water intake. The L1 will have either 3 or 4 separate intake holes, where the L2 has the square plastic covers with a Phillips head screw on either side.

I had a brand new factory L2 case put on my 2008 200HO back in 2016. It's been a great LU. It replaced an L1 that same as the OP I hit a log and the Skeg broke off. Dealer fixed it and it didn't last a year. Insurance paid for the new case. It has the 1.86 gears. The L1 was not as durable as the case I had on my 2000 200 Ficht Ram but this motor and Lower is much faster than the Ficht ever thought about being. If you can get an L2 get it!!
