    Looking at a 2003 Champ 196 with a 200 Yamaha

Can anyone give me the good, band and the ugly?

My current boat is a 1997 181 Elite DC.

    Thanks - Terry

There really isn’t anything bad about an 03 196 other than it would be better with a 225. I had an 03 188 and loved it , woulda rather had the 196 but storage was the issue . I currently have an 08 198 and to me it’s perfect . I have only ever had mercury so I can’t comment on the motor but as for the boat if it is in good condition and your happy with it I don’t see how you can go wrong . I’m on my 3rd champ now and honestly I’d rather repower a used champion , update the electronics and trolling motor than buy a new boat . You hear a lot about how champions ride and it’s all true but the way they fish is even better. Having that wide squared off front deck is a huge plus . Most boats are to pointy and clostriphobic up front . The storage is more than adiquate and the fact that you have 2 rod lockers and the cooler is where it should be ! Champs are where it’s at , your gona dig that boat .

Only thing I could have a minor gripe about on my buddies 196 is the hole shot. It’s not exceptional, but could also be connected to the first comment above about really needing a 225. It’s a great boat other than that.

For sure the 196 could use a 225, but it's a great boat. If I were to buy a used boat, a 198 is the only thing I would consider. My 196 will see 67-68 on a good day. Hole shot is about 4.5 seconds (empty live wells) and rough water ride is very good. Storage galore and a great fishing platform. Sure I wish I had the 225, but it's a great boat.

I've actually begun quietly looking for a used 198 I can re-power with one of the new Mercs.

I had a 2004 196 with a 200 Yamaha HPDI and loved it. The HPDI is very easy on fuel and oil. I never had any problems with it. I actually just bought a 2004 198 with a 225 HPDI last November that looks just like my 196. Same basic color scheme and sold my 196 to my fishing partner. He loves it too. You won't be disappointed in a 196! It rides great in rough water and the front deck is huge to fish off of!!

I have a 2003 196 w 200 Merc Opti and just love this rig! This is my second Champ and may be the last bass boat I ever need. Storage is great, economy is amazing, the ride is beyond compare and the deck space handles 3 anglers no problem. I get 64mph on a good day with a full load and 2 aboard. I never need to go any faster, but I've often wondered how she'd run with a 225?
