    1998 venom looses power

    1998 Johnson Venom J200STLECE
cranks easy, runs fine up to about 35-38 mph, after about a mile it starts surging like running out of fuel, pump bulb and its solid but it does help it. New fuel lines from tank to Vro and new bulb, it does this at higher mph but quicker. Rebuild VRO? I do premix, is there a possibility of vro sucking air from oil side?

Is it capped off? If not then yes you are sucking air in from the oil inlet.

Push in on the key to see if shooting extra fuel when it happens helps.

Back working on motor again, new problem, boat cranks great and idles fine will run up to 2500 rpm. Then goes into a safe mode, has new stats and water pump so not over heating issue. Not sure if the new problem is related to the "running out of fuel" after a short run. I did have it do the safe mode, then 10 mins later boat got on plane and ran normal, didn't run far enough to see is the other issue was still there. But next run it was back in a safe mode.

Unplug your temp sensors and run it again. If it is staying in safe mode the possible bad power pack.

Ok, is it possible for it to still start idle and run at low rpm with a bad power pack?

Unhooked both temp sensors with no change in running condition. Squeezed bulb to make sure not fuel related no change. Guessing it's the power pack, twenty years of tournament fishing guess something going to eventually break.

Have you run a portable 5 gallon tank to eliminate the possibility of a fuel issue between the tank and engine?

That can get expensive and not fix the issue.

If not the power pack, then what other things to look at?

Stator, Quick test would be to unhook the shift interrupt switch from the power pack. Follow the wire harness up from the shift linkage to the pack..That will cut out three cylinders.
