I ended up replacing the rivets with bolts and nuts

Can you put a spacer between the rivet gun and the rivet to get more depth?

It is not a depth issue I am going in at a angle that is very drastic

    Would one of these work?

I bought one a couple of years ago because I was tired of the chinzy stamped steel job that I had been using. The arrow unit linked above is of much better quality, and for a little over $20 well worth it. The head rotates on an angle, so they will get in to spots you'd never reach with a standard tool. Good Luck!

Use flathead bolts and nylock nuts. I just recarpeted my entire boat and replaced all the rivets with nuts and bolts. I also put a strip of aluminum on the inside of the lid to add support for the nuts.

Sounds like a Bullet. Those guys would bolt the lid to the hinge and then pop rivet the hinge to the boat. I've put new carpet into a dozen or so, I took the bolts out of the lids, leaving the hinge pop riveted to the boat deck. Other than a piece of shit bass cat they are the only ones that do that.

You could use Pan head bolts and would work.
