    Hey Pat

I picked up that 2000 champ 187 scx today. Yamaha 175 vmax 25m prop. Ran it alone, nothing in the boat, it gpsd 62 mph at 5400 RPM. It had good bow lift, seemed to have some unusable trim there at the top, no gain in speed just roost with the last little bit. Looks like an 8 inch slidemaster or so. Not sure of prop height. You think raising the plate will get any more rpm/speed or is it about maxed out on it. Had 20lbs of water pressure at wot.

If you trim up and lose speed you’re too high now.

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of. I'm lost on a champion for sure.

I raised the plate up 1/2 or so for giggles. Picked up a few rpm lost 2mph, gained mostly roost. Thought it might spin faster and use less trim. So... I'm guessing I gotta drop some pitch. This boat is empty running 62 at 5400rpm so far. I'm guessing when I load it down it's gonna flop. What would recommend to get it to a 5800 rpm 65 mph rig? That seems to be about the norm on the other 18.5ft 175hp rigs I've had. I gotta 23 tempest and a 25 trophy laying around. Not sure if I need to get the 25 m yam prop repitched or try some others, what Chee think?

    Speed is weight and horsepower...
You should be able to twist that M to 5,600-5,700 at 65 mph. Ready to fish.
If we put a 23 on it, you'll get your rpms up but you're not going to go any faster.

I'm with you, something is off somewhere. I'm on the road for the next few days but when I get home I'm going to pull the cowling off and make sure all my butterflies are laying flat at wide open throttle. If I strike out there im not really sure where to go with it. Motor already seems maxed out on Height or pretty close.

Motor diagnostics over the internet is a sketchy business, but like you said make sure all the hardware is correct.
That boat should have been rated for a deuce, but it is what it is, so you've got to make it the best you can. Check you load, it's not happy with 300 lbs of jig heads in the front box, and when you set motor height it's always important to go too far and bring it back, you need to find out what too high and too low is. Only way to find just right.

And then you can always call Wayne at Hydrotech and get yourself another 50 hp.

Lol I was wondering just how much one of those FEI kids would add to a 175. That is Stout.

Hey Pat... I'm back. Well I finished the tournament this past Saturday morning, had my partner in his boat and all of our tackle, blast it off and ran down the lake and look down the boat is turning 5800 RPMs at that point. So I was like wow I guess it just needed the soot blowed out of it. we finished a little while and decided to move so there again I'm playing. Off put the hammer down trimmed it out and was running 5800 RPM again. So I thought great whatever was wrong with this thing must have worked itself out. Not so fast. We hopped around fishing throughout the day and I never did open it up again till we came back in that afternoon would live wells full of water and it was back to Turning about 53 or 5400 RPM again. Morning Temp was about 75° afternoon temps were about 90. Surely it wouldn't be that much effect on the motor temperature wise I wouldn't think. If I got something going on fuel-related you think? I was just wondering if it's starving for gas somewhere. Motor cranks easy idles fine it doesn't cut out or miss that I can tell just has been running 5400 RPMs every time I've had it out with the exception of those two passes.

    Like we talked.
Internet diagnostics is dicey. It could be a lot of things not enough to go on.

We found the culprit I think. Bad tach. I ran the boat some more. Jumped out there running 5800-6000 @ 62-63 mph. Made a few stops then noticed 5400rpm again, still running 62-63 mph. Tach bounces all over the place when idling. So that's a relief. Apparently the boat is running close to what it should. Thank you for comparing notes with me!
