    Yamaha HPDI 150, 175, 200, 225, 250 And 300 Owners

I see a lot of comments that say stay away from these motors. Read other comments that the 150, 175 and 200 are some of the best two stroke motors built by Yamaha but walk away if it has a 225, 250 or 300 HPDI on the back of the boat.

Just wondering approximately how many hours, what year / size of your HPDI and if it ever went kaboom or is it still on the original piston / rings?

I have a 2006 200 HPDI on my Skeeter with approximately ~ 300 hours. Knock on wood, it still has the original top end, runs good, has 115 compression on all the Cylinders and smokes a lot less than my 2005 Vmax 200 ox66. So far, happy with its performance.

It is not the HP of the motor. It is the block size.

2.6 liter models have very few problems. 3.3 liter models seem to be more problematic.

There are no knock sensors on the HPDI models. Why? No one knows outside of the Yamaha engineering department in Japan.

The failures seen in the big block 3.3 liter models seem to be predominantly due to detonation. VZ models (think bass boat) seem to be more prone to detonation failures than do the Z models (think saltwater boats).

Many, many, many big block VZ owners have nary a problem. Some big block VZ owners have problem, after problem, after problem.

I’ve been learning more about the motors and different opinions people have on them. Thanks for the info!

2008, sold new in 2010 HPDI Series II. Never been in a shop since new. Closing in on 500 hrs. Keep the fuel system clean and run ring free every tank of fuel. Normal maintence, fuel filters, water pump, plugs and lower unit oil changes.

2 300 HPDI's, one with 170+ hours all original. Get's premium fuel with sea foam every tank and some 100LL mixed in with the last tank of fuel for storage. Filters changed regularly and propped at the limiter. Lots of HT parts. Still runs like new. The other one 300+ hours. Basically stock. Spotty maintenance but always premium fuel. Propped correctly just below limiter. Waiting for that one to blow from plugged injector. CJ

02 200 hpdi VMax, 600 hours and runs like new. Typical maintenance performed. IT is not a fast motor but you turn the key, drive, shut her down and fish....works for me.

I had a 2003 175 HPDI that blew with 54 hours on it. I ran Yamalube and Ringfree in it the whole time and it was propped to turn 5800ish RPMs. Got a new powerhead under warranty and ran it another 7 years without any issues.

    Damn, that sucks!

What caused the first rebuild? Are you going to rebuild it again, part it out, or just sell it as is?

2006 250 HPDI owned since 2007 with 48 hours on it... I lost #2 at about 490 hours. All original... Not 1 single problem until the end of 2016 when the cylinder torched. NEVER ran any conditioner or additives at all up to that point. Some say I was SUPER lucky... main service every 2 years since owned.. NO PROBLEMS at all for 10 years... had both 1 and 2 done and nothing but problems ever since. I love the motor.. just wish it ran like it did before the cylinder went down.

Stay away from the big block motors and you'll be fine. Run Ring Free in EVERY tank and put 87 non-ethanol fuel in her. Great motors and pretty bullet proof with proper maintenance.

Not sure that I would agree with this comment. Yes, on the non-ethanol but I can see an advantage to using 91/93 octane. IMO the number two cylinder is prone to detonation. There is no knock sensor in the HPDI models. The only thing that an owner can reasonably do to protect himself from detonation is to use gasoline with a higher octane rating. That and don't be putting the hammer down and going from idle to wide open throttle in a nanosecond.
