    Belt whine in neutral?

    Posting for a friend says his 2013 Mercury 4 stroke 115 makes a whining noise in neutral? He said Sounds like it's comming from the gear shaft? Sn 2b047274

    Several items should be checked- oil level, has gearcase been removed for water pump maintenance, shaft lubricated, belt in good condition/tight, no loose objects under cowling, flywheel covers properly aligned/secured, gear lube changed/good condition, etc.

    Difficult to diagnose "sounds" by keyboard/monitor, but if he's in our area, be glad to schedule it in for inspection.

    No thanks for the video but I think we found the noise it is the gear shaft that rides on a Teflon bushing and I think the bushing gets dried out over time and that's what's causing the noise.
