    Pellets

I am thinking about getting a pellet grill and have a question about pellet storage.

Do you empty the hopper when done cooking and store the pellets in a dry place until you are ready to use them again?

I do put a cover on the grill though. (Traeger)

My cooker is under roof with a cover and they stay good in hopper. If they get wet they will turn the size of a Cheeto puff. I have been a stick cooker most of my life and went to the dark side (pellet) and I love mine. Pitt boss with a savanahha stoker pid controller. Good luck JD

My RecTec is under roof on back deck. Keep the hopper full. No issues yet. Pellet bag I'm using stays in my pantry.

I resurrected this thread because I have a follow up question. I did get the RecTec Stampede and put the accessory vents on the back. I will keep it covered on a patio.

I still have some concern about getting caught in rain while using it or letting it cool down after a cook. The vents should keep rain from getting in the back. The lid on the hopper looks like a good design with the spring loaded latch. I did some experiments with pellets and they seem to be ok in a humid environment, at least for a short time. When I put one in a small dish with water it swelled up almost immediately.

Does anybody do anything to protect the hopper if it starts to rain?

I have a RecTec and only empty the hopper if I'm changing pellets. No problem leaving them in the hopper. Get a small slotted scoop for kitty litter.
