Extended warranty

I have read several people complain about the reduction of the Humminbird warranty to 1 year. I purchased a Helix 7 new on eBay today and got a 3 year warranty from Square Trade for an additional $29.99.
Thought it was a pretty good deal after reading of all the issues others were having.

My question would be "where does it go for repair under warranty?". My son got and used an extended warranty from Square Trade for a new Dell laptop. When it came back from warranty repair, it literally had handwritten documentation as to repairs done and didn't work much better than when he sent it in.

Personally, it sounds like a scam but hope that's not the case.
