    Pouring Lead

I am thinking about starting to pour lead weights, jigs, wobble heads at first then possible spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. What do you recommend I purchase or what items will I need to pour these. I plan to pour them in a detached garage with the doors open for ventilation.

If your wanting just for something to do, 21dc has you set up. If your might be thinking of saving money by pouring it yourself,, wont work. You would have to loose a ton of jigs to make up for the money spent to make them. You would be better off purchasing the jigs already poured and applying the skirts yourself. Just a heads up.

^^^^ This is true... I like pouring with the hook brands and size of my liking. Most pre poured/painted baits have the wrong parts for me.... I spend 1000's every year on making my own baits.... But it's a hobby that I love, That has benefits after the build.

Stick with this group as well as join http://www.tackleunderground.com/com...21-wire-baits/ for additional reading and learning. Do-It has some good videos to watch on their web site and you tube. Watch some of the you tube with caution as there are many safer issues being presented in the videos.

Also, it will be more economical to pour something you will lose frequently.

I have a buzzbait mold, but think I've been throwing the same four or five baits for at least two years now. I've worn through some blades, but put another on and keep cranking. I get a lot more use out of my swing jig and football head jig molds.

Totally agree with this. I started getting into pouring because of losing too many Shakey heads. Now that I pouring my own breaking them off does not hurt so much.

Please get a fan, as large as you can afford. My son is an expert on things like air flow, air pollution and such. He cautions me a lot about proper ventilation when pouring. Lead fumes is some bad Chit?!!!BF

Lead needs to be heated over 1000 degrees in order to become airborne. It is a good practice to have good ventilation when pouring but it isn't lead fumes that will hurt you if you are using clean lead from a source like Rotometals. Now if you are melting down scrap lead, well that is another story but clean lead won't smoke or stink and it won't vaporize and become airborne unless you heat it to well over 1000 degrees.

I pour in my garage with a fan throwing the air outside. Most of my lead is dirty, old sinkers, net weights, wheel weights, etc. The lead might not boil but the crap on it sure makes a stink. I also flux it and you most certainly want to have air blowing that away from you. I keep my pot on an old cookie sheet for safety. A fire extinguisher is handy just in case.
