Re: Gas smell in Rod Locker Fix (rudapa)

My "98 TR 19 had no gas smell at all. I have less than 10 hrs on my 19X2 and today I noticed a strong gas smell and could not figure where it was coming from. Mine has the screens at the splash well and one under the middle seat but I could smell gas while fishing in the front of the boat. This thread gives me some ideas and thanks for sharing some possible causes/solutions.

My three month old new 2009 explore 17 (new from dealer) also has a gas smell in the rod box and other boxes. It will stink up my three car garage for about two days after bringing in the boat. The first time I brought it home, I though the gas tank was leaking and my wife wanted to put it outside encase it blows up.

man, thats a pretty serious problem IMO. I was looking at a triton, but in no way do i want to buy a boat and then have to fix it..

pretty sad that this will turn me away from a triton

I have a 2010 Triton Bay Explorer 196 and the gas smell is soo bad on our that we complained to Triton and they could not give us a direct answer. They sent us vents and we had them installed and Triton reimbursed us. We had to put them in the center console below the hull and one on the outside of the center console. Aesthetically it looks bad, but it was the only problem. I thought it was funny that this was happening in the freshwater b/c I have the saltwater version one. We have a tarp over ours and the smell permeates in the tarp, but we had our tank pressure tested and there were no leaks.

    Re: (fordexpoman)

I have an 04 tr-186, yes, gas smell. I've gotten in the habit of leaving the lockers cracked open just a bit while it's sitting and no problem. I also have an 08 18x2 with no problems at all. I'm trying to sort through all of the reports and determine if this is a problem to specific years or models? Haven't gotten my statistics tabulated yet.

YOUR PROBLEM IS YOUR PLASTIC FUEL TANK. GAS FUMES PERMIATE THROUGH PLASTIC.

All the boat manufactuers use plastic tanks. Why dont the rest of the brands smell like gas. I have a 05 TR196 and I have to leave my rod locker open because of the smell.

bee-line boats should use metal tanks since bumble-bee did before selling out. my freind bought the last bumble -bee out of the plant, and it has a metal tank (no gas smell) ever. his boat is for sale.

Re: Gas smell in Rod Locker Fix (rockfalls)

get a piece of foam rubber, like an old couch cushion and cut it to fit it wont seal as good as expanding gfoam but it does fill up the gap i used the expanding foam to hold it in place .this way if i need to run any wiring i can either cut a slot in the foam or knock it out and start over

Re: Gas smell in Rod Locker Fix

Ive had the gas smell in my side lockers as well since new. Well I tried filling the gaps up around the side lockers about a year ago, but that did not help, but I did not add the vents along the inside panel in front of the seat area as suggested. Cut not bring my self to cut a hole in my fiberglass. Last week I tried taking the access cover for the gas fill connection besides the passenger side seat off. Since then I have not noticed any gas fumes in my side lockers.

The one on the passenger side. After leaving the rod locker closed for a week, I still had a guess smell in my rod locker box.

I know this is an old thread but, if you smell gas inside your boat then YOU HAVE A LEAK. Fuel is a closed system, there should be no smell! The fix is not venting! It is finding the leak. You (or your dealer) will have to check every clamp, gasket and hose from the filler neck to the engine.
