I am looking at Ford F150 trucks and undecided on which motor to go with. I have a 20 ft Ranger Boat and do a lot of fishing in NE TN. I would like some input from everyone on how each tow with a large boat. Thanks!!

While your boat is a large bassboat when compared to either trucks capabilities and compared to other boats like bay boats and other trailers it is very small potatoes and will put zero strain on either engine.
Someone more knowledgeable will say, but gearing should be your bigger consideration. I believe the 3.55 is what you want? Then all the added cooling and definitely a backup camera.

Both have sufficient horsepower. But since Upper East Tennessee is so mountainous, the 3.5 might be a better choice.
Ford is really discounting the 2.7 engined trucks. See if your dealer will allow an at home demo of a F150 w/2.7. Hook up your boat and take a quick test run with it.
Hey littleabe I’m a ford senior master tech been with ford since 1990, I would highly recommend the 3.5 over the 2.7! He have had serious issues with the 2.7’s. Stay away!!! Just being honest! The 3.5 or the 5.0 is your best choice by far! If u have any questions shoot me PM and I’ll help you any way I can
So which was the winner?
I’ve had both. Both were great! In mountainous areas, the 3.5 shines rolling 75mph up the interstate with your boat in pull. 2.7 is more fun to drive and faster off the line. Also did about 2mph better not pulling, but 1 mpg worse pulling. Pulling on flat terrain you’ll feel little difference. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the big hills here, I’d do another 2.7 ina heartbeat!
Get the 5.0.....Any eco boost is either eco or boost, but never both. 5.0 much easier and cheaper to maintain, GDI in the eco boost is not optimal, first thing you will need to do with the eco boost is add a catch can.....The 2.7 was built for fuel mileage not constant towing.

Also dunno if the 2.7l comes with the 10-speed tranny which gives slightly better mileage. I'm looking hard at the 2.7 and not considering the 3.5.

Any of their 5 motors (including the light diesel) will do the job. The 2.7, 3.5 and 5.0 engines are all remarkably strong and fast in 1/2 tons.
The 2.7 are suddenly having cam phaser problems from what my brother tells me. He’s a tech in Dearborn. Weird that this problem just popped up. He said it’s a big job!

Even the newer 3.5's are having phaser problems. Both the 2.7's and 3.5's are always in our shop for turbos, Heads (2.7). Phasers ( 2.7/3.5). The 2.7's seem to have more problems then the 3.5. The 5.0's were good until this new Gen3 version came out with Dual fuel. We have had a couple drop valves and these are in trucks and mustangs that have less than 30k miles.

I would go 3.5 with 3.55 gears. I have a 2017 and its a beast and gets good mileage. Had a 2015 5.0 before this one and would never go back to the v8.
