Sometimes the extra kick is in the gun and not the caliber. Example I had a 300 win mag that would knock your dick loose and I had another one that was like shooting a 30/30. The difference was in the weight and balance of the gun, plus a small kick pad. In a perfect world you could "test shoot" to see if she can handle the recoil. Plus make sure it fits her body size. I think the right .308 would be no problem for a lady.

Of the ones mentioned I would go 25-06 for sure. Everything based on the -06 case is where it is at IMO.

25-06 for open space and 30-30 for the woods.

This is the best advice given so far !

I disagree! The 308 based cartridges for deer and other similar sized game are where its at! Anything bigger is just wasted powder, noise with extra recoil. If you need bigger, you have to go much bigger! My hunting rifles consist of a 7mm08, 338 Federal (338-08) and a 375H&H.

My cousin's 9 year old daughter shoots a .243. I helped him sight it in, it was so much nicer to shoot than my .270. Hardly any kick to it. She used it to drop a 160 in buck in it's tracks last year.

Small framed 10 year old son handled the .308 with no issues. Plenty of umph and little recoil. Ammo easy to find. Has also bagged a few with .243. Did ok. I have a 25.06 and it would not be my choice for my spouse.

    I like the .308.
That being said, I sight in rifles for people in the fall. One of the MOST unpleasant rifles I ever fired off the rest was a Ruger M77 Ultralight (or whatever Ruger calls it) in .308. Lots of recoil, and way too much drop at the heel of the stock. The barrel would literally fly up off the rest and nearly flip back over if you didn't hold it down. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I had one of those in 30-06. It was a bear to shoot and I can handle recoil.

I second that. My 7 year old is shooting it real good. Also you can get reduced recoil loads for most of those calibers if you wanted to lighten the load. If you look at ballistic the 7mm-08 is a very good performer when compared to just about any caliber that is close to its size.

Remember them reduced recoil loads when sighting the gun in or just target practice. It will keep her from getting trigger happy and prevent a lot of problems down the road.

After shooting different ones my wife opted for a .308.

I personally shoot a .25-06, but would not recommend for a young hunter or a lady. My kids have killed plenty of deer with a .243, but have since switched them over to 7mm-08 and .308.

Any of those will kill a deer at typical distances. I’d avoid the 06 just because its a long action round and with women typically being smaller, a short action may be handier for her. I personally think the 7mm seems like a neat cartridge but I doubt the deer would know the difference with those three.

Put a muzzle break on the 6.5 and she will never feel the kick. Also have a simms butt pad installed to fit her and you will not have any issues.

Absolutely. Has great ballistics, little recoil. I’ve shot one since I was 8 years old and bought my wife her own last week. She loves it.

The .260 rem is also a good choice. Dad shoot this and it's been a good deer round.
