Can't find any yamalube hd gear oil for my 115 sho. Any one use the lucas synthetic marine gear oil? Any suggestions?

I used Mercury lower unit grease on my last change. Previously I used Pennzoil l/u grease from Wal-Mart @ $5.56 a quart.

Why would you run another manufactures oil when Yamaha makes a specific oil for their product that you own. Spend thousands of dollars for a motor and want to switch oils. You only need to change the oil once a year or 100 hrs. Im sure that other lubricants are comparable but with internet sales it easy to find Yamaha products where ever you live. I live in Texas and I order my engine oil/filter, lower unit oil and ring free on line from a dealer in Florida. Its delivered to my front door within 5 days. Easy peasy and I never have to worry about running the wrong product.

    Exactly what he said.

Why second guess the factory engineers or take a chance on these Expensive Pieces of equipment?

None of us are smarter than the factory engineers.

Cheap oil in your outboard? Maybe if you are planning to keep her under half throttle!

The HD gear lube is an extreme pressure GL-5 lubricant. Because of the additive technology GL-5 oils shouldn't be used in older gear cases that contain red metal bushings. The SHO (and other 4.2L V6 and V8 yamaha's), use steel bearings throughout, so they can safely take advantage of the higher grade lubricant. The non-HD lube is a GL-4 style lube that is safe for general use in older gearcases that may have bronze/brass bushings that can be attacked by the sulfur additives in GL-5 lubes. I don't recommend running anything but the specified HD lube in a SHO.

This seems like a pretty good deal on the HD gear lube in the 1 gallon size.

I've not used this company before, but I'm giving them a shot. We'll see how it goes.

The HD gear oil should not be used in the SHO 115. Only the V6 4.2s and V8

I missed that the engine being talked about was a SHO 115... With that model, HD gear oil isn't required, but it is safe to run the HD oil. SIM yamaha sells oil change kits with both standard gear lube and HD lube for the VF115LA.

Amsoil has a gear oil that will meet your needs and can be order on line and delivered to your door. I have been running it for years all my motors.
