    Jack Plate installed, advice?

2007 Bass Tracker PT190 w/ 2stroke 90HP Optimax, had a 6" Atlas Jack plate installed and it came out really nice but upon further inspection I found some cracks which didn't seem to be there before. Should I worry about these or is it due to the reinforced bolt plate? Any advice would be much appreciated or even if you have run into this before, thanks!

Yes sorry but that is bad. Don’t run it until it’s fixed. Find a local welding shop. It can be fixed easily.

Do you guys think it would be best to have both of those plates cut out and replaced and rewelded on or just weld up the cracks?

No what I would do, is add a angle in all four sides of the braces. It will be 10 times stronger then just the .100 aluminum welded back. A good welder will know what Iam talking about. When he sees it.

By any chance, do you think the cracks happen when the jack plate was installed? Kinda looks like it happened during installation and mounting.

Id take the advice of Glenn had have them add some sort of gussets to help add support. If you just weld up the cracks they will just reappear sooner or later.

To be honest that's what I was thinking because I haven't even taken it out on the water and I always use a transom saver from the trailer to the motor when transporting and I only traveled maybe 20 miles. If I pick up and bounce the motor the transom doesn't really flex at all. But I agree I believe that is what it is from, inquired at 2 welding shops with pictures of the cracks and am waiting to hear back. I will make sure to post the finished product to help anyone in the near future.

Let me know who you find and how you like them. I need some of the stiffeners rewelded under some of my deck lids.

Update: The welder came by and checked out the boat, he believes the cracks were caused when the jack plate was installed due to the transom plate which goes from bolt to bolt. The plate stuck out past the washers about a 1/4" which was causing stress to the brace where it transitions from the brace to the transom. He is going to machine the plate so it is flush with the washers when mounted and also chamfer the back of it so it is not such a sharp edge and is also going to weld up all the cracks and add some welds is a few spots where he thinks there should be. I will post pictures here once it is done and keep you guys posted as to how it holds up. He said if it doesn't hold up well then we will add more bracing. He is coming by Saturday to do the work. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Also what makes me believe it was done during install as well is that even with the cracks, there is absolutely no transom flex with pushing up and down on the motor.

Stratosguy0725 - When yours did that how did you go about fixing it? Did you get it re-welded and leave the jack plate on or did you end up taking the jack plate off?

Took the plate off, and brought it to a dealer and had it fixed under warranty. Don't tell them toy have a jack plate.
Me being a welder I called the shop they were going to send it to and told him how I wanted it done. I had a 3/16 plate welded on top after the cracks were fixed for extra reinforcement. Left the plate off. It's most likely from haveing a jack plate on it. Shifting the weight of the motor farther back, can cause a lot of of flex in their transons and where those braces are, they take the abundance of force. They are not designed for jack plates. Although having a jack plate on that boat did gain me 4mph.

Update: The welder came and fixed the cracks today, we used a small drill bit and drilled the end of each crack to prevent further spreading. We then took off the top plate and bolts and he welded up everything. Looks very nice, gonna cross my fingers and see how it holds up, he said if it begins to happen again we can add some bracing or make a better support system. I will post pictures later. Thanks everyone.
