At the end of my rope and wallet!

Hello guys , I need your opinions please.Had my
2010 sho powerhead replaced with the latest greatest
version . Exactly 1 year and two months with the issue
being 2 months out of warranty this customer satisfaction program
powerhead has locked up at 73 official hours. I went from no problem
motor to having no motor now. What would you do ?Get a new powerhead
at my cost ,or go with another manufacturer ,or get a remanufactured
motor with a 1 year motor. This is the 2nd Yamaha product that has failed
For me the first was an 2004 Hdpi 250 now this Sho.I got
    15 years out of my first 1999 150 vmax😡

Have you talked with the regional rep?
A new engine should last longer than 14 months and 73 hours.

This was the replacement powerhead Yamaha installed
with a 1 year warranty due to their recall. After the year ends
    their responsibility was over.

That was straight from the regional rep?
7 years out of the original defective power head, and 14 months out of the updated replacement? Wow.

I would try talking to a few different people at Yamaha or dealers to see if you can get some help. The bad part is right now new motors arent easy to come by from merc and yamaha. The good news is the g2 comes with 10 years still I think

Try Breman Marine In Breman,GA they said they could get a 250 SHO in 2 weeks. That where we got ours, great people to work with.

Did you call Yamaha Customer Support and ask if goodwill assistance could be made available? That is what I would do.

I hate to hear that. I have a 2012 SHO that just blew. It’s still under warrant until 2020 so the new power head is on the way. That’s what I was told today. Sure makes me think about trading it once I get it fixed...

Just wanted to let you know the update on my Sho
that was locked up just after warranty .Turns out that the replacement powerhead
is okay and the lower unit is toast. Cheaper than a powerhead but still costly.
I was told only use yamalube hd gear oil was running Merc high performance gear oil.It
was the wrong one according to the mechanic *♂️

Did you ever hit anything with the LU/prop since you owned it? (If you haven't let me know what your secret is, lol).
I doubt the oil had anything to do with it, but at least it's better than a power head.

It is definitely possible that the wrong oil caused the gearcase to fail (obviously if there was water intrusion that is a different story all together). The HD lube that the SHO calls for is an extreme pressure GL-5 lubricant, meaning is has sulfur compounds and other additives that are not usable in older style cases that have red metal bushings. The Mercury lubricant is a good general purpose product, but it isn't a GL-5 lube needed for the style of hypoid gears used in the SHO lower unit.
