Recommended SI Range on Each Side

Just bought a Helix G2 SI and am still learning the SI. If I'm searching for rock piles or deep structure (15-35 ft in my lakes) what range would you set your SI at? I've been running 100 ft out on each side and it's tough to make things out. I would assume that maybe bumping it to a shorter range would make the images bigger?

I run 100 to find things. Then shorten it up to 50 to look at what I found.

To get the best depth-to-distance ratio for detail, use a SI range that is 3 times the depth.
That will give you 1/3 of each side for the water column, and 2/3 of each side for the bottom.

General searching for major features, 75'-100' works good.

Try only left or right to see more detail.

Or split screen left and right.

When strictly searching for structure I'll put it in contour mode and eliminate the water column, increasing my screen size artificially. Looking for small things like weeds or little differences in bottom composition I'll keep the range under 120, big items like reefs and humps that are more than 50' across the top I'll run out to 250. Do I get good detail? Not by a long shot. Do I cover 500 acres much faster than at close range? You bet I do. If I see something worth checking out it gets a waypoint so I can find it again easily.

This is a point I was checking out for smallmouth recently. I'm on 800khz because the range was closer and the bottom compatible with strong returns, also the steep contours on either side shortened up the useable range. At greater range or softer bottom I'll go 455.
