Replacing stripped screw below water line

I posted this in the General Discussion but realized that I probably should have posted it here. One of the screws holding my speedo onto the bottom step of my transom stripped out when the speedo hit an object in the water, now it will not grab to tighten. The current two screws are size 8. I bought some size 10 screws since the size 8 is not grabbing the fiberglass anymore. Will I be okay to fill the hole with silicone sealant and install size 10 screws or is there a better way to solve this problem?

I would clean the hole and repair it with this:https://www.jamestowndistributors.co...+Repair+Filler

You could use silicone, but it won't be as permanent as just cleaning the area then applying some fiberglass resin and hardener in the holes then you could either choose a different area for the new holes or drill in the same dried holes you just put resin in.
