    250SS Performance

Had the boat out this weekend and still think the RPM’s are a little low. Running 65MPH @ 57000 RPM with two people and full tanks of gas. I am running a 28P x 14.25 Suzuki Prop. Motor is about 3” prop to pad. Boat is a 2008 Z520 and does not have power poles or Talons. Seems a little slow to me... thoughts?

    What's your red line?
    I don't have a 250ss.
    Were your livewells full?
My piddly 175DF redlines at 6100.
If I have a full tank 40 gallons and two guys that weigh 500 pounds total and full livewells, my boat really struggles out of the hole but top end is within 2 MPH of just me alone.

That sounds about right, especially with warmer weather and higher humidity. Last weekend, I reached 67MPH @5900 rpms and I have a 27P x 14.5 Suzuki 4 bladed prop with 2 people & half way loaded with fuel (28 gallons). Plus my boat has a Gorilla Hull and it's lost speed since I had it put on, but I'm not a top end person. I know that I can get more speed out of mine by playing with the jack plate, but whenever I start pushing +68, it starts to chine walk and I'm not comfortable driving my boat that way or that fast.

Just curious, what was your best speed with your previous outboard before you repowered? From the sounds of it, you seem disappointed with the performance of your Suzuki, especially after seeing the boat test specs on Suzuki's website for your boat model. From reading the other boat specs, it seems like that the prop to pad distance is anywhere from 1.5" to 1/2" in order to reach those top end speeds (Bass Cat & Charger), but it doesn't give it for the Rangers for whatever reason. I did notice that for the 2014 boat test with the Ranger Z521, it's best speed was 70 with a 27P and had only 15 gallons on a 85 degree day. In a way, it makes me wonder if Suzuki detuned these motors along the way since these boat tests from 10 years ago similar to what Mercury did as well with the Pro XS line.

6200 is what should be about tops
I think it's 6300 for red line. You may need to try raising it some or going to a lower pitch by 1.

Works for me. Thanks. I'll try keeping my RPM's below 4000 for maximum fuel economy in my less powerful motor. Some day I'll have a Basscat with a 250 SS, someday.......

I previously had an Etec. 74.5 was the best I saw with that motor. I seem to continusoulsy run lower RPM’s. I don’t think I’ve seen over 6k to date on the tach. Motor is down about 3” prop to pad. I have thought about raising it some on the plate.
