    When to trim the motor?

First time operating an outboard this past weekend and didn’t know what to expect but thought it would accelerate just like a vehicle from a dead stop. It took some time to get on plane with WOT and only going 10 mph, once it was on plane I trimmed the motor up and the Rpm’s jumped 500-1000 or so which I’m not sure if that’s normal. Max mph was about 32 mph with a 17” pro guide v175 mercury 115 and 3 passengers including myself.

You should have the trim all the way down at hole shot,it will plane faster and not porpoise. I don’t trim until the boat is out of the hole and leveled off and then I trim up to match my speed. Too much trim at lower speed will cause the boat to porpoise and not enough trim at higher speed will slow you down. Some hulls don’t ever need max trim to run at their best and will slow down at full trim due to the prop losing bite and lift. You will need to experiment with your particular set up to learn what trim works best at a given speed.
