Heading is a nice feature which the AS GPS HS provides.
Haven't personally used the internal GPS to compare jitter with the puck, but I would think the puck is more stable.

For a console installation, it is better to have an external GPS antenna (AS GRP or AS GPS HS) at the transom so sonar data and location data is at the same place for accurate waypoint creation/locating, and contour map creation.

For the bow when fishing, the AS GPS HS will stabilize the Chart view at those speeds to make fishing offshore waypoints easier/accurate.

The units have internal GPS antennas. "Need" depends on how accurate you want your installation to be.
With Helix units, you cannot share Heading separate from GPS.

They share data via Ethernet. Each unit would need an Ethernet adapter to connect an Ethernet cable to them---AS EC QDE.
Then an Ethernet cable long enough to connect them taking into account the path you route the cable--AS EC 20E is the 20' version. There are several lengths available.

If you have more than two units to connect, that takes the AS ETH 5PXG Ethernet Switch. Then you would need an Ethernet cable to go between each display and the Switch.

I know. I have an external antennae on the bow attached to my 998. I was wondering which “model” antennae come with my new unit. In the past there was the AS GR-16, AS GR-50, High Accuracy, etc. i think the extetnal antennae on the back of my boat attached to the console 998 is the High Accuracy model.

The 998 does not have an internal GPS antenna so to have GPS/Mapping, it came with the GR-50 external GPS antenna. The first ones may have come with the GR-16. That will work with a Helix unit. The High Accuracy GPS antenna was an extra cost upgrade from the GR-16, it was discontinued when the GR-50 came out.
The only units that age that have internal GPS antennas were the 300, 500, 600, and 700 series units with (i) in the model name.

The GR4, GHRA, GR-16, and GR-50 are discontinued. The AS GRP replaced all of those.

No Helix units come with an external GPS antenna so there is no model number for them.
The XX9 models did not come with external GPS antennas either. They have (i) in their model names.
