    Trolling Motor Prop Nut

Has anyone tried to make their own prop nut like the TH Marine kind. $50 seems a bit steep for a piece of aluminum with threads. I have the abilities to machine one. I think I might try this. Thoughts or experiences with trolling motor prop nut??

A nut is a nut ! Correct threads, depth, o-ring, should be a no brainer if you have a lathe and the know how to use it. I have the TH prop nut for my MinnKota Ultrex for the standard prop, but I'd like one to fit on a Kipawa prop the same way, TH won't even answer my e-mail about making one. If you can get one for your prop, let me know if you'd be interested in making me one for the Kipawa.

    Certainly an interesting project.

I have NO IDEA if this will help in any way, but....Amazon has a new function that allows it to identify bolts etc. It just might help you further identify the specific bolts/threads etc. It utilizes Artificial Intelligence. It is free, and you need an Apple phone to use it. Here is a LINK that explains more.

I had some students make some in our Machining class and used it on my Maxxum. Worked fine and never came loose. I have the CAD drawings somewhere on my work computer I could send them to you.

I like it because you can remove the prop with out any tools and makes it easier and quicker to remove the prop on the water to clear weed tangles or fishing line from the prop. Just remember to not loose the prop pin.

The only advantage I can see with the TH nut is the large flat surface that fits the outside hub of the prop. By tightening down on that surface, it "squares" the prop with the prop shaft and helps to prevent any "wiggle" the prop my have on the shear pin.

I recently added the Bob's Balanced Trolling Motor Prop Nut to my 80# Ulterra. I did it for ease of prop removal and cleaning. The bonus was it actually quieted the motor a bit I assume because of what Jones mentioned in his post about squaring the blade. At higher speeds I has a slight whump-whump-whump prior to adding the large nut. Now the sound/vibration is gone.

If you do build one, I'd machine a through-hole in it, and slot the end of the TM shaft (if not done already). You can put a screwdriver on the shaft and turn the nut if the shear pin ever gets bent or the prop gets stripped out.

Was going to post the same advice. If that shear pin breaks it'll be a PITA removing the nut otherwise.

The Bob's v2.0 Trolling Motor Prop Nut has a hole drilled through the nose so that is no longer a problem.

But as noted above it's still $50!
